First of all, point count doesn't work.

Point-count only SEEMS to simplify bidding.

Actually, it over-complicates the process beyond the comprehension of the average genius.

The basic premise is fallacious because after you count apples (points), you must bid in oranges (tricks).

All the systems and most of the conventions try to correct the fallacies inherent in point-count.

And they all fail.

You may think you understand all the hundreds of rules in a system such as Standard American, for example, but what about your partner? Does your partner always bid properly by those rules?

And do you always win?

You may win more than your share, if you are clever at play of the cards.  But in that case, you can become a champion if you will cut the Gordian Knot of point-count and instead:
 

1. COUNT TRICKS.
2. COUNT TRUMPS.

You will suddenly and dramatically become the superstar of your bridge group; and nobody, not even your random partners, will know why you have become so good, and apparently so lucky, (you will open the bidding twice as often as the others who wait for high point-count totals).

Take the case of one Emma Bell.

Emma Bell had earned 96 Master Points in four years of playing once a week in each of the two leading bridge clubs in Los Angeles.  Then she read Eugene Hanson's first book on bidding without point-count.  In the next four weeks, she earned more than a hundred Master Points; MORE THAN IN THE PREVIOUS FOUR YEARS!

Actually, the Hanson System offers TWO easy ways to win:
 

1. At party bridge, when you are paired with a series of random partners. (Hanson Game Plan "A")
2. At Duplicate, when you play with your regular partner. (Hanson Game Plan "B")

However, Hanson Game Plan "A" still wins consistently at party bridge since most of the others are condemned to be losers because of their adherence to all of the errors of Standard American.  (Or as many of the rules as they can remember.  Few players can remember them all.)

Hanson Game Plan "B", though more sophisticated, is easier to use than Hanson Game Plan "A".

And even though you'll open the bidding with weaker hands in many cases, Plan "B" is safer than Plan "A", and very much safer than the various point-count systems, especially Standard American.

Trump count is tightly involved in every aspect of the Hanson System.

In the Plan "A", the trump count treatment is simplistic (5-card majors).

In Plan "B", the trump treatment is holistic.  A simple procedure provides the best opening bid and the best response for ANY combination of cards, including two-suiters.

Perhaps the biggest advantage of the Hanson System is that the bids are so NATURAL that they are almost intuitive, with VIRTUALLY NO MEMORY WORK REQUIRED.

Once you have tried the simple Hanson System for a few hands, you'll never again tolerate point-count.  You'll thrive like the green bay tree, and enjoy bridge far more than ever before.
