At the close of the 1700's and the in the early 1800's saw many cabins built on the banks of the river. Among those settlers were: Benjamin ROBERTS, Thomas PREBBLE, Johnathan SHEPHARD and his sons William, Samuel and Henry (all from the the south branch of the Potomac); Samuel COE, William WELLS, William PETTY, and John WILSON (all from Harrison Co., VA); John BENNETT, Jacob BUMGARNER, Frederick BUMGARNER, Andrew BUMGARNER, Richard REEDER, Charles ROCKHOLD, Elijah ROCKHOLD, and Jepheniah WISEMAN. These men laid the foundation for the territory inside Wirt county.
