Notes for Eleanor Rose Kimm
Living Individual - Details withheldEleanor attended Chinese school while in grade school. Went to Bakersfield High School and graduated from San Jose State College in 1956 with a degree in Education. She taught elementary school in Bakersfield, Los Angeles, and on US Military bases in Spain and Turkey.
She met her husband while at SJS College but didn't marry until about 10 years later. They were married at her brother's house in Bakersfield on August 3, 1967 with a Chinese dinner reception at Bamboo Chopsticks. Eleanor fought off breast cancer in the early 1980's. She worked in the Reseda Elementary School library until John retired in 1993. They moved back to Bakersfield during 1993. She cared for John during his treatment for (and battle with) a brain stem tumor (1996 until his death 13 March 2000).
Doctors diagnosed her (in August of 1999) with what is called "non small cell lung cancer" (4th stage) in her left lung. When she first found out about the cancer it was already spread to her lymph nodes. We have learned the cancer Eleanor has is common with smokers. Approximately 10% of the people who get this kind of cancer and don't smoke get it from second hand smoke. We can only speculate this might have been related to the many years Eleanor was around her elementary school staff who smoked during breaks.
