Four years after marriage the family made an overland trip in the company with William Tavenner and family; and Willis Bozeman and family, to Missouri. They reached their destination on 10 October 1866. Within a few miles of their first home they lived together sixty eventful years, sharing their joys and sorrows. James Craig Davis served in the Union Army during the Civil War and later was Judge of the County Court in Missouri. For many years he was a successful farmer and stockman. The Davis home, two miles east of Pilot Grove, was known for the unfailing and generous hospitality of the heads of the house. After retiring from active farm life the father and mother moved to Pilot Grove. Here he was President of the Citizens Bank from the time of its organization until ill health forced him to resign. He was a man of keen discernment, the possessor of boundless good humor, and one who got much out of every day of living.
