John Sellman, a headright on Benjamin Brasseur's Maryland land claims, was b. in England, c 1645-50, according to 'John Sellman of Maryland and His Descendants,' by W. Marshall Sellman, privately printed, 1975. He was probably a youth of twelve or thirteen when he entered the colony as a "custom servant." In 1675, he received two warrants for 50 acres each from Charles Calvert "for time of service performed in the province." In 1676, for 2900 pounds of tobacco, he purchased 175 acres (Covells Folly) on the south side of South River and west of Flat Creek in Anne Arundel Co--about 1.5 miles NE of present Davidsonville, MD, where he, in turn, hosted many "custom servants" and "indentured servants," three of whom died in their service and are buried at All Hallows Church.
Also probably in 1676-1678, he m. Elizabeth Brasseur, d/o Benjamin (Benois) and Mary Brasseur. They had 9 children. John Sellman d. 1707, Baltimore City, MD. In his will he left 900 acres to his wife Elizabeth. Elizabeth m.2 8 Nov. 1708, in Calvert Co, MD, Dr. William Nicholls, chirogeon (surgeon), who d. 1722, Calvert Co, MD. No children by this second marriage."
