Notes for William Bowditch

Mary was born February 14, 1669-70 at Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts. She died in May 1724 at Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts. She and William are buried at Charter Street Burying Ground, I assume this to be in Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts, but that information is not provided.
He came to Salem with his mother about 1679. He was a mariner and merchant, and was known as Captain Bowditch. In 1696 he was captain of the sloop "Mayflower". In 1700, he captained the ship "Essex Galley" which was wrecked on Tenapoo Reef in Salem Harbor. The reef later became known as Bowditch's Ledge. In 1706, he captained the ship "America". He was a selectman, a representative to the General Court and treasurer of the Union Wharf proprietors. In 1721, he was one of the prominent citizens appointed as trustee to manage - 5000 of the town's money, but refused to serve.
