Mary's birth date has been estimated to be about 1738. She was born
at Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts. She died December 16, 1783 at Salem,
Essex Co., Massachusetts after a long illness.
After the death of his father, Ebenezer, his mother, Mary lived

spoken of as Captain Bowditch; after the Revolution he became a cooper.
Their home on Brown St. was standing when Harold Bowditch wrote his book,
also standing is the home they lived in at Salem, now part of Peabody.
There is a tablet at the home of Nathaniel as a child. Ill luck attended
Habakkuk as it did his father. On April 19, 1775, his sloop, the "Polly"
went aground on the Anguilla Reef, during a storm. The Salem Marine
