He went to Urbana, Champaign Co., Illinois at the age of 18 to work on the farm of S. G. Williams, and it was while he was there that Frederick Darlington Bowditch, his brother, came to Urbana, also. Soon after this he returned to Micaville, Mitchell Co., North Carolina, where he married and settled on his inheritance land. He became a prominent and respected farmer.
