Charles served in the Civil War, 1863-64, retiring as Captain in the 5th Massachusetts Cavalry, his brother's regiment. He was an archeologist and genealogist, author of the Pickering Genealogy. They lived at Jamaica Plain, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts.
