Garrit was born January 30, 1845 at Peterboro, Madison Co., New
York. It is not known when he died. He was a cattle breeder, importing
one of the first herds of Holstein cattle from which the breed was
introduced into this country. He was also a State Representative at
Albany, Albany Co., New York. In 1924 he was given an A. M. Honorary
degree at Harvard.
