He was born in Danville, Iowa and graduated from Elliott Business School in Burlington, Iowa. He was elected to the County Superintendent of schools at the age of 27 in 1908. Four years later he was elected County Auditor and in 1916 began working for the State Highway Department. In 1921, Forrest went to Sioux Sity, Iowa to work for a Mr. D. F. Lytle, founder and owner of The Lytle Investment Company and The Lytle Construction Company. These companies became the C. F. Lytle Company, Inc. Forrest worked for The Lytle Company for thirty-five years. He held positions in the company of Secretary, Vice-President and President.
