Notes for Eden Brashears
!Two Brashear Families: by Charles Brashear
In 1811, Eden sold his prospective interests in all estates in Kentucky to
Richard Brashear (s/o Marsham) according to Walter Brashear, Jr. (HSB, pg 133)
and removed to Claiborne Co., Mississippi, where he engaged in mercantile
pursuits.
In 1820, he was present at the treaty negotiations between the US Commissioners
and the Choctaw Indians. He signed as a witness; his brother Turner, was one
of the official interpreters.
In 1834, he was on the tax lists in Claiborne Co, MS. He became quite rich and
gave $10,000 to establish a hospital at Grand Gulf, MS. In his will, on file in
the Court House at Port Gibson, MS, he gave a sum of money to establish
"Brashear Academy" at Port Gibson, which still stands. Eden is buried at the
bluff of Grand Gulf, where a handsome monument was erected to his memory and an
iron fence put up, surrounding his square in the quaint old cemetery. (Letter
from AK Brashear, s/o Joseph Newton Brashear, to Walter Brashear, 1 Jan 1926,
printed in HSB, pg 121)
When Turner Belt Brashear died, he took Amelia and Joseph to "raise", but
Amelia was married in her mothers home. (See Turner Belt Brashear - b 1783-85)
