Notes for Thomas Brown, Jr.

Thomas purchased land from Col. Michael Cresap and laid out the town of Brownsville, PA. He was buried in the town cemetery plot "on the hill"; his tombstone reads: "Here lies the body of Thomas Brown, who was once the owner of this town, who departed this life, March 1797, aged 59 years."

!DAR line 119569: "Thomas Brown, Jr. (1738?97), served as lieutenant colonel in the Pennsylvania and Virginia troops. He was born in Maryland." The DAR Patriot Index (p.94) shows "Brown, Thomas, Jr: b. 1738, d. 3?8?1797; m Ruth Brashear, LCol PA VA". DAR line 31035 just has, "Thomas Brown, 2d, (1737?97), was a soldier to defend the frontier of Westmoreland Co, PA. He was born in Maryland."

"Thomas Brown, [Jr] b. 1738, d. 1797, married Ruth Brashears and had the following children: Ignatius, Levi, Zachariah, Simeon, Elizabeth (who m. Cox), Eleanor, and Ann. ... Thomas's son, Bazil, married Dorcas Goe, m.2. Mrs. Philip Worley. His children were Bazil Brown Jr, single; Sarah Brown, single" (from Ohio Valley Genealogies, by Charles A. Hanna, Baltimore Publishing Co, 1968; but that genealogist seems to have confused Basil Sr's son Thomas, with Thomas Sr. Documents show that Thomas Brown, s/o Basil Sr, m. Dorcas (or Dolores) Goe.

!The Will of Thomas Brown, [Jr], 24 Oct 1796, Fayette Co, PA: to brother, Basil Brown, ½ of lots on Mongahela River betwixt Dunlaps Creek and Samuel Jackson's line & half of ground rents of all [my] lotts in Brownsville; to my son, Ignatius Brown, ten shillings PA currency to him and his heirs forever, as thought by the testator to be his proportionate part of his estate with what he has already given; to my four sons and daughters, viz: Elizabeth, Elenor, Thomas, Levi, Zachariah, Ann, Samson, Ruth, all the remaining ... equally; I appoint my worthy friends Samuel Jackson and Thomas Gregg ... executors. /s/ Thomas Brown. Wit: John M.C. Hezliss, Philip Wehrly, Joseph Wells.

In 1815, when a Market House was built on ground that had belonged to the estate of Thomas Brown, executors Basil and Wilkes Brown protested (Brodine, History of Fayette Co, p.430).
