!Records of S. Lee McGohan and Mrs. Verda E. (McGohan) Grindon - He had a meager education. On December 25, 1845, He bid his friends and relatives adieu, mounted his prize posession, a good horse, and started West with only $25.75 in cash. He would stop for a few days whenever work could be secured. On March 2, 1846, he reached his destination, Burlington, Iowa, with $27.00 in his purse. He was the last one to make the trip across the Mississippi ice bridge that Spring. People stood on the river's bank, watching, fearful that the horse and rider would break through at every step.
