Entered Virginia Military Institute when he was 15 (after getting his early education in the Culpeper schools). He graduated in 4 years and then went to the University of Virginia where he graduated from Law School. He also served in the Spanish-American War with the Culpeper Minute Men, which became Company B of the Third Virginia Regiment of the Infantry.

He practiced law in Culpeper, VA for a number of years at Barbour & Rixey and later with Rixey & Hiden.
