After the death of his Grandfather Capt. William Rixey in 1862, he went to live with John B. Hunton. After his Aunt Eliza died, Uncle John B. Hunton married and went to live in Texas.

He enlisted in the Confederate States Army at Culpeper, Va., on 1 Feb. 1863, in Company D, Little Fork Rangers, Fourth Virginia Cavalry, Gen. J.E.B. Stuart's Division. He stayed in that division until 1 Dec. 1863, when he was transferred to the 43rd Battalion, Mosby's command. He was in that division until General Lee surrendered in April, 1865. He surrendered at Fairfax Court House. He lived with his Uncle Charlie Rixey until Dec. 1866 when he started West. He arrived in Mexico, Missouri on 12 Dec. 1866 and farmed near Mexico for two years. Then he went to Moberly, Missouri where he married Martha T. Smith on December 12, 1872. He had two sons: William Davis Wall born 8 Mar 1882 and Ernest Wellington Wall born 17 June 1884
