!US Census 1900 (16 June) Virginia, Culpeper Co., Page 86a, line 54: LISTED WITH Richard LEWIS (b. Sept 1836) FAMILY (SEE NOTED for full details) Martha F. Rixey (mother-in-law b. July 1820 - 79 - in Virginia - WIDOW - both parents born in VA - lists 1 child born and 1 living)

Signal service was rendered the Confederacy by Martha Frances Rixey (widow) during the war between the States. She often disguised herself in old clothes and appeared in the camp of Northern soldiers, selling pies and cakes, in order, if possible, to obtain information, which she took good care to remember and convey at the first opportunity to the Confederate Army. She never wrote down any information, but her memory was good and the information she secured was often of value to the Confederacy.

Her home "Rose Dale" was ever open to the homeless and lonely widows and orphans among her kindred.
