Emma's mother died while on a trip coming back from Germany. She was lost overboard during a storm at sea. Emma was raised by her grandparents (her mother's parents) Nehemia and Manerva Rittenhouse. For many years she was a cook working in California. She raised her 5 children after Horace and she separated in about 1920.
