Notes for Mason Loch Weems

[junk.FTW]

B/D from Family Bible via Dr. Anne Agree

Biographer of George Washington. See Weems' Washington, the book.

Information above provided by JoAnn Good Weems

Mason Loch Weems was clergyman at Mt. Vernon Parish, VA, where George
Washington was a member of the congregation. Weems, who was also a
writer, is credited with inventing and writing the story of young
George cutting down one of his father's cherry trees, which is the
source of the "I cannot tell a lie" quotation. It was fiction, of
course.

(from JoAnn Weems:)
There is a Weems/Botts museum in Dumfire, VA, which gives a nice tour
and history lesson. There is also a Weems, VA, which was established
by the family as a port for its shipping line.
