There is much dispute about who James married, Susannah Mackell or Sarah Isaack. Those who believe James married Susannah Mackell believe that Sarah was a wife of James's brother, Col. John Weems. The other side believe that Col. John Weems's first wife had no sons living at his death, according to his will.

Library, District of Columbia, under the title of Weems Family, Maryland, Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia, etc.: James son of David - "James Weems, born 1731, lived in St. James Parish, Anne Arundel Co., All Saints Parish, Calvert Co., Md. Was a merchant and a planter. After the war had quite a controversy with London agents with whom he had dealt prior to 1776, and who had then owed him a large balance. Served from Calvert Co., in Revolution. He married Sarah Isaac, daughter of Sutton Isaac after 1751 and before 1765, probably about 1755. Children: David, William, Lock, John (b. 1763, ordained 1789, rector of Port Tobacco Parish), Elizabeth, Mary, Sutton Isaac."
