Hampshire Co., VA owned lot 40 which was 249 acres and is located north of Springfield. Tarpley's cousin Simon, son of John Taylor, brother of Tarpley's father, George, was in Frederick Co., as early as 1753 and went to Hampshire in 1767. There is a Richmond Co. settlement on the south branch of Potomac in Hampshire Co., in the later part of the 18th century, including James Tarpley, three Simon Taylors, and others. In the late years of the later part of the 18th century, many of them went to Mason and Fleming Co., KY.
