!Prepared for the ministry of the Protestant Episcopal church at the Va. Thelogical Seminary, near Alexandria. Graduated July 1858. In 1862, he and his family were ordered from their home in Fredericksburg because of the movements of the armies in that vicinity and the imminent danger of bombardment. Became post chaplain in C.S.A. Became rector of Old Christ Church at Alexandria, Va., 1866; assumed charge of Immanuel Church, Baltimore, Md., 1867. In 1883, he became assistant bishop of Va., at which time Richmond became his place of residence. In 1892, when Virginia was divided into a northern and a southern diocese, he took charge of the southern diocese.
