!Kentucky Education Television has information on the life of Cassius Marcellus Clay. It is found at: http://www.ket.org/trips/whitehall/clay_1.htm - Cassius M. Clay Elliott was probably named after the famous emacipationist "Cassius Marcellus Clay" who was born on October 19, 1810 and died July 22, 1903. The article on Clay says that he was "controversial from the beginning, and controversial still, he was an emancipationist who lived in the slave-holding South among slave holders. He became very vocal in speeches for the emancipation of slaves, making many enemies in the process." One of his quotes is used at the top of the web site - "Slavery is morally, economically, physically, intellectually, socially, religiously, politically -- evil in its inception, in its duration, and in its catastrophe."
