Jonathan Sheppard along with his wife and some descendants are buried in the Sheppard Graveyard at Palestine, WV. Robert Sheppard along with his wife Ruth are also buried there. The Graveyard is located near where Jonathan's cabin used to stand.(Garfield Road) 4 miles to Silo. Jonathan Sheppard was a soldier of the American Revolution. He was born at New Mecklenburg, Which became Shepherdstown, WV.
John Sheppard our earliest known ancestor was located in the early 1700's on the South Branch of the Potomac River, what is now known as Hardy Co., West Virginia. John Sheppard fathered nine children. The best known of those was Jonathan Sheppard who enlisted in the Revolutionary Army on July 1st. 1775, at the age of 15 years. He served one year then was discharged. On his
return July 1776 he enlisted again. This time at Hagerstown, Washington Co., Maryland with Colonel Moses Rawlings's Maryland Regiment. During the Battle Of Fort Washington, he was taken Prisoner by the British, and sent to England. At Wars end he was returned in an exchange of prisoners between the two Armies. He enlisted again and served at Fort Pitt and at the seige of Yorktown. In the late 1700's he married Martha Wilson and started a family. In the early 1800's he migrated with his family to Wirt Co., West Virginia, which at that time was Harrison Co., Virginia. At about this time or a short time later his brother Robert migrated to Wirt Co., West Virginia. Records of Harrison Co., Virginia show that Robert married a Ruth Madden in 1802, the same year that Jonathan and Robert's father passed away. John Sheppard left a WILL, naming Jonathan and Robert along with the other children. (WILL BOOK # 1, Page # 240 Patterson Creek, Virginia). There are a few records of Jonathan and Robert in Wirt Co., West Virginia. There are Histories written by Tommie Sewell and a John House. Some of this material written can be found in the Library at Elizabeth, Wirt Co., West Virginia. There is also other informative material available there along with some marriage, birth, and death records of their families. There is also supposed to be a Will on record at the Parkersburg, Wood County Courthouse for Jonathan Sheppard. John House wrote a manuscript about the Sheppard Graveyard at Palestine, West Virginia, located on the old homestead of Jonathan Sheppard. This was written about 1901 and gives a description of the grave markers and dates.
In 1988 a Sheppard Cemetery Association was formed and Incorporated with the State Of West Virginia. Several Sheppard Decendants are in this association. Most of them live in the area of Palestine, West Virginia.
