Notes for Thomas Gates

Gates in Scotland means "road" or "way". Gloucestershire, England is bounded on the North by Worcestershire, on the South by Somersetshire. Bath and Bristol are in Somersetshire near the line of Gloucester. Upton is in Worcester about 60 miles from Bath. There is a post office in Chew Stake, Bristol postal district, Chew Magna, Bristol district and Chew Mendip in the Bath District.
Upton, New Jersey is named for Upton, England. This seems to have been the general name for all the land on both sides of Timber Creek (at first called Gloucester River). Upstream is Wallings, at the upper end of the Whiteall plantation which Richard Chew bought at Upton in 1710. There is an old graveyard on this plantation. It is the land Arthur Powell located at Upton in 1701 for rights bought of Elizabeth Haddon's husband, Elizabeth having heired the rights from her father who bought them in England. Richard Chew bought this land from Richard Bull.
