Notes for Archelus Madison Hughes, III

5'8", 145 lbs, dk hair, high forehead, gray eyes, large mouth, prominent chin according to his son.

Born on East Fork of Leatherwood Creek. Ran for congress against John W Crockett in 1836 and was beaten. Had just been appointed as clerk with a good salary with a bank in KY when he died at the age of 38.

!Originals Arch Hughes' journal which detailed his life, as well as several other Hughes family journals are in possession of Roy Hughes Randle: "I left Franklin, Williamson Co. for the Western District the first day of March 1825 and arrived Dresden, Weakley County about the 17th of the same month and then determined on making it my home... I never went to school two years put it all together and that was it entirely from my sixth year till I was in my fifteenth in which time I learned arithmetic and the english grammer...I left home the 7th day of November 1816 in the 17th year of my age...I commenced the study of the law which was on the 12th day of February 1820 in money notes and other property to the amount of $185"

After Archs death, Elizabeth Brashear Hughes returned to Rutherford Co., TN to live with her folks, sending at least William and Ed, her two eldest sons, to Aunt & Uncle Bivens to raise. In 1840, she sent them to Uncle Brice Hughes to raise to manhood. Census records of Rutherford Co, p. 255 in 1850 show her living in the McCracken District, Aug 24, 1850 with Henry, Jesse, Archelaus, and Mary. 1860 Census Page 280-494 finds her back in Weakley Co, Civil District #18, Aug 16, 1860 farming, and family with her as; Henry, Jesse (farming), Archelaus (school teacher) and Mary.
