John is credited with Revolutionary service as 1st Lieutenant under Capt. Godfrey Fry, in the 3rd Battalion, York Co., PA militia and is incorrectly listed with a wife named Elizabeth "Black". It is not known who is responsible for Elizabeth's name being incorrectly recorded. Another source credits John as being a Lieutenant in the Flying Camp.

!SHENADOAH CO VA. RECORDS: The inventory of the personal estate of John Bushong Senr dec;d sold at publick sale June 24th 1809. Among the buyers were: Andrew Bushong, George Fravel,
Emanuel Windel, William Bushong & George Altdoerffer. On 10 April 1810, the account of sales was ordered to be recorded.
