John Sturgis was born in 1749 in Upper Merion, Montgomery, PA, USA. He died on 22 Aug 1827 in Near Smithfield, Fayette, PA, USA. He was buried in Woodbridgetown Cemetery, PA, USA. John Sturgis came to Pennsylvania from England with his brothers Nathan and Amos, settled near Philadelphia and afterward living in Philadelphia married Leah Phillips of Philadelphia. In 1775 and several children were born to them. In 1787 moved to Fayette Co. Pennsylvania, John P. was born.
John Sturgis was born in 1749, enlisted in Josiah Hamer's Co. of First Penn. Batallion in Oct. 1775, commanded by Col. John Philip de Hass under whom he served on expedition in Crown Point and Ticonderoga. He served from Oct. 1775 to Nov. 13, 1776. His name appears on the rolls as a private in Capt. Peter Hosleins Co. Philidelphia Militia September 1781. John Sturgis is also given in list of associations and Militia of City of Philadelphia, a return of the 4th, 5th, and 6th classes of Chestnut Ward under command of Thomas Bradford. Residence during the Revolutionary War was in Philadelphia.
John Sturgis died in Pennsylvania February 14, 1822 and is buried in Woodbridgetown Cemetery. He was married to Leah Phillips in 1775 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA, USA.
