He had been placed in an orphanage and was taken out by several farmers who wanted cheap help. He was mistreated and ran away. He rode the rails all over the US and earned his way by working at whatever he could find. He owned a hardware store in Palo Alto, CA and sold it upon retirement. He and "Willie" have a daughter Carol, who is married to a retired firefighter, Bill Skelton, also of Kelsey, CA.
