Notes for Archie Eugene Gaddy, Jr.
Archie Eugene Gaddy Jr. ("Gene") was born 10 July 1927 at Baylor Hospital in Dallas, Texas. Born the same day was his twin brother, Sam Hanna Gaddy. Their parents were Archie Eugene and Mary Virginia Hanna Gaddy.
After the divorce of his parents Gene, his mother, brother and sister lived with his mother's parents at 3309 Mockingbird Lane, Dallas TX.
Gene graduated from Highland Park High School, January 1945. See school annuals for activities. At graduation he received the National Honor Society Achievement (Blanket) Award.
Served in the U. S. Coast Guard for abuot one year at the end of World War II.
In 1950 he received degrees in Civil Engieering (with honors) and Business Administration from Southern Methodist University. Activities at S. M. U. included Phi Delta Theta, Tau Beta Pi (Sigma Tau, chapter president), Blue Key, Student Council, Pi Sigma Alpha, Alpha Kappa Psi, and Phi Eta Sigma.
After college graduation Gene was employed for two years as a Civil Engineer with the City of Dallas.
He organized the consulting civil engineering firm, Gaddy and Loven, in 1952; he was its president until the firm was sold in 1974. The firm was consultant for many real estate devlopments, including Northwood Hills, Prestonwood, White Rock North, Forest Meadows, and the Village Apartments.
From 1974 to 2006 he was an independant real estate development consultant.
Other business activities activities included Gaddy & Loven Investments and various real estate properties.
Lifelong member of the Church of the Incarnation (Episcopal) . Served as Church Vestryman, Junior Warden and Treasurer. Was on advisory board of Episcopal Cathederal Gardens.
Member and Past President of the White Rock Rotary Club. Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow. Served on various Rotary District committees and as District Secertary.
Member and Past President of Park Cities Philatelic Society. Charter Member of the Collectors Club of Dallas. Life Member of American Philatelic Society. Member of Texas Postal History Society and Texas Philatelic Association. Formed a major Dallas County postal history collection and had articles published on the subject. He took an active part in many Dallas area stamp shows, including TEXPEX. In 2006 he received the TEXPEX Service to Philately Award.
Gene served on Board of The Dallas County Pioneer Association for eight years and was Treasurer of the organzation for six years.
His other memberships have included the American Society of Civil Engineers, Sons of the Republic of Texas (Hopson Burleson), Sons of the Anerican Revolution (Rev. John DeBow), Society of Mayflower Descendants (John Alden), and the Park City Club.
Mary Louise Coull (Davis) and A. Eugene Gaddy were married at Church of the Incarnation on Dallas on 14 June 1952. They met at the Church and both attended SMU. The first home of Mary Louise and Gene was at 440 Bondstone, Dallas. Mary Louise died in 1965.
Gene married Sheryl Ann Metters in 1987. They have lived at 6917 Waggoner Place, Dallas. Sheryl and Gene have a house in Lukehaven on Lake Texoma. Their worldwide travels have taken them to over fifty foreign countries. For many years they had season tickets to the Dallas Symphony and the Dallas Opera ; season tickets for the family for the Dallas Cowboys and the Dallas Sidekicks.
