Maryland Legislature; Attorney General of the United States, 21 June 1831-33; recess appointment as Secretary of the Treasury; appointed as Secretary of the Treasury, 23 June 1834; but rejected by the Senate; appointed Associate Justice, 1835, but rejected by the Senate; sworn in as Chief Justice of the United States, March 28, 1836; died in office, October 12,1864. Fifth chief justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, remembered principally for the Dred Scott decision (1857).
