John was the Clerk of the Exchequer for Queen Elizabeth I.
He was married to Joan Swayne, daughter of John Swayne of Blandford Forum, Dorset. John's third son, Thomas, was the great great grandfather of William Pitt, Earl of Chatham, who was Prime Minister of England from 1783 to 1801 and 1804 to 1806. He played a dominant part in British politics during the interval between the two terms
