!"ABRAHAM ABEL GATES, 1793-1870", BY CARL & LEO GATES, 1975:
Abraham Abel Gates, known to all as Abel, served as a Corporal in the 5th Regiment, US Army Regulars, during the "Frontier Wars" in the Michigan Territory, 1820-1825. After his military service, he first married a Miss Peabody in Gardner and later "went west". No further record of Miss Peabody or any children they might have had in Massachusetts has been found. He met and married Mary Jane Burns in Missouri and first settled in Pike County. Later he lived in Cole, then finally in Adair County, east of Greencastle, Missouri.
All fifteen of Abel and Mary's children were born in Missouri. From there, several of their children, Jasper, John, Thomas, and Mary, also "went west" to the Oregon Territory. The remainder of their children remained in Northeast Missouri and many of their descendants are found there.
As of 1975, a pine tree still marked Mary's grave in the Union Cemetery, west of Novinger, at the junction of Missouri Hwys 6 & 149. A church (United Brethren) which the Gates Family attended, burned down long ago at that site. Whether or not Abel, too, is buried there is not known.****

10 NOV 1841: Abel Gates purchased U.S. Land as follows - North 1/2 of NE 1/4 of Section 34 in Township 44 of Range 13 in the district of lands subject to sale at Fayette, Missouri containing 80 acres. This land was located in Cole Co., MO.****
