Notes for Nicholas Ware
!NOTE: He studied medicine in Augusta, GA and later law at Litchfield,CT. When he died he was a Trustee of the State University.
He lived in Augusta, GA where he was active in politics, He was also active in civic and business activities. He was Mayor of Augusta, GA and was the U.S. Senator for Georgia. Ware County, GA was named for his family. He died in New York in 1824.
The marriage of Nicholas Ware, Esq, Attorney at Law and Miss Polly F. Randolph was reported in the weekly issue of the Augusta Chronicle & Gazette of State, dated 28 Dec 1799. The marriage was performed by Rev. James F. Hull.
After the death of his first wife, he married Susan Brock Carr in 1806.
Nicholas Ware, V built a residence in Augusta, GA ca. 1818. It is known as the ""Nicholas Ware House on Telfair Street." It currently houses the Augusta Art Association. One of its most lovely features --perhaps the most memorable-- is the floating staircase, which extends to the top of the three and one-half story structure. It has been described as one of the most beautiful staircases in the South. The "Holiday" magazine has highlighted the staircase and the house's other features of grandeu in an artcle published in 1958 or 1959..
During his second visit to Augusta in 1825, the Marquis de Lafayette was a guest of honor at a ball in the mansion.
In the "Gazetter of Georgia, 1837", pp 310-311 # 85 it states: Hon.Nicholas Ware was born in Virginia, about the year 1776. While young, his father settled in South Carolina. Having finished his Academic course, he studied medicine with Dr. Murray of Augusta. He afterwards studied law in the office of the late Col. Seaborn Jones, and subsequently attended lectures of Judge Reeves in Litchfield, Connecticut. He sustained a high rank as a lawyer. Mr. Ware was a friend of science; he was one of the active trustees of Richmond Academy, the President of the Board when he died. He represented Richmond County,and in the Legislature opposed, with much ability, the celebrated, but little commended "Alleviating Law". He was for some time the Mayor of Augusta, and Judge of the City Court, but he resigned these offices when elected to the United States Senate. He died at New York, in 1824, in the 49th year of his age. He departed this life with the lively hope of blessed immortality."

!Will signed 8/16/1824, and Probated 10/25/1824. Original Probate Records found in a folder (loose files on shelf along back wall) in Richmond Co. Court House, Augusta GA.: Nicholas bequeathed to his wife Susan young bay horses and carriage, and equal shares of the residue of his estate to each his wife and minor children. He also mentioned his brother George.
