Entered public life, held many offices including Mayor of the City of Philadelphia, friend of Benjamin Franklin (their letters survive), delegate to the First Continental Congress, and helped found the Pennsylvania Hospital among other important activities. His will names his wife, Elizabeth, his children Samuel and Hannah, his son in law Thomas Franklin (husband of his deceased daughter, Mary), the children of daughter Mary, and a niece, Mary Custard. (NOTE: Mary Custard, mentioned in her Uncle Samuel's will, was the daughter of George and Mary Roades Custer)
