Notes for Edward Everett Hughes

Started the diary his brother Arch took over. He went to live with his Aunt by the name of Decy Bivens and Uncle after his father died. After two years he and brother William were sent to Uncle Brice Hughes. He was sent to school, run by Mr Wade, in Nov 1838, sometime during 1839, his cousins Jesse and Mary Bivins joined him in schoohouse of Mr. Edward Weatherford. He says that "Mr. Weatherford was a clever man, but would in spite of reason get drunk and fall asleep frequently on the benches during school." The school ceased in 1840, though his cousins continued in another school, while Ed did errands and work for his Aunt & Uncle. In Dec. 1840, his mother decided at the request of Uncle Brice M. Hughes to send oldest brother William and Ed to live with him, at Mills Point, (near Hickman) KY. So, William and Ed left Uncle Bivens in the care of a wagoneer were taken to Nashville, from where they were to embark by steamboat to Hickman, KY. Uncle Bivens had reccomended the boys to the care of Gov. Newton Cannon, who seemed proud to see them and kept them three days. He took them to the boat and commended them to the care of the Steamboat Captain and gave each of the boys 50 cents each, the first pocket money either of them had ever had!
