Erastus filed his will in Gaston County on 21 June 1912 in which he states, "I give and devise to Basil Gray Campbell the boy now living with me and whom I have raised, my Home Place in Gastonia." It would seem that Basil is not Erastus’ natural son but took the name "Rankin" after his father’s death. Erastus died in Gastonia on 18 Jan 1916, just before his son’s wedding, and is at rest in the Greenwood Cemetery in Belmont. Mary died in Charlotte on 17 May 1931 and is at rest with her husband.
