!Early St. Louis lawyer. After graduating from Princeton College with a degree in law, he came to Missouri in 1827 and first established himself in practice at St. Genevieve, where he as a partner of John Scott, who was the first member of Congress elected from that state. Soon afterwards, he was appointed U.S. District Attorney by President John Quincy Adams. That appointment caused him to move to St. Louis, where he became an accomplished lawyer and influential member of the Missouri bar. At different times, he served in the city council and as city attorney, and as a State Senator. He married Miss Penelope Pope, daughter of the distinguished judge Nathaniel Pope and sister of Major General John Pope of the U.S. Army.
