!History of Baldwin Co, pg 392: "Somewhere between Savannah and New York, the ill-fated steamer was wrecked at sea. Gazaway Lamar, his son, Charles and his sister, Rebecca were the only members of the family on board who escaped the disaster. Three children of Gazaway Lamar and also his wife were among the lost. It was one fo the most terrible fatalities of its kind ever known; but amid all the horrors of the wild scene, the heroism of Rebecca was such as to make her deservedly famous among the women of Georgia."
