James was connected with John Hinton, rather than John's brother Thomas, based upon his eldest son's name & description of his birthplace and early childhood home. John Henry Hinton, eldest son, was most likely named for his grandfathers - John Hinton & Henry Rittenburg. He described his birthplace as "between Oakville & Bronte". It appears that James Hinton and family initially lived on his John Hinton's farm in Trafalgar Twp., Halton Co., Ontario.
On 10 Mar 1857, John, Francis, and James Hinton of Halton Co., Ontario received US Land Patents in what was to be named Hinton Twp., Mecosta Co., Michigan. The size of their properties were quite large compared to most, 300+ acres. James' property included parts of sections 17-20. John's was most of Section 15, & Francis Hinton's land was on Section 10.
James appears on the 1860 tax assessment rolls of Hinton Twp., but he & his family were counted on that year's census in Delhi Twp, Ingham Co., Michigan living near Henry Rittenburg, Liza Jane's father. James is a sailor at this time like his brother Edward & other relations who remained in Ontario.
In 1864, eldest son John Henry enlisted in the Illinois Volunteers during the Civil War from Windsor, Mercer Co., IL. Sons Charles E. & William A. were born in Illinois in 1866 & 1868. Liza's brother James Rittenburg lived near Windsor in Rivoli Twp, Mercer Co., IL at this time, to
By 1870, James, Liza, and their younger children were living in Penn Twp, Sullivan Co., Missouri where James was a farmer per the censu
In 1880, this family was in the Morrow Twp, Adair Co., MO home of daughter Celestia and her husband William Graves. James was a railroad tie maker at this time. Daniel, also a railroad tie maker, lived nearby with his young wife & new baby. On this census dated June 17th, James stated his father was born in Wales and his mother in Canada which confirms what has been learned of the family in Ontario from the Crown Land Grant
A great-granddaughter, Eleanor (Moser) Tate, recalled hearing that James used to travel between Michigan and Missouri periodically. Per William Albert Hinton family records, James Hinton died on 16 Oct 1880 when a frisky pair of horses ran away and drug him while hauling logs. His place of death and burial remains unknown.
