(b. 1814 - 36 - in MA). Children listed (born in MA) are: Una (dau b. 1844 - 6); and Julian (son b. 1847 - 3). ALSO LISTED is: Mary Doyle (b. 1826 - 24 - in Ireland)
!American Author: Nathaniel Hawthorne was a key figure in the development of American literature. He wrote such classics as "The Scarlet Letter" and "The House of Seven Gables". In May of 1859 the Hawthornes traveled to Southampton, England, in hopes that the stay in this resort town would restore the health of Sophia whose health had declined after her arduous time nursing her daughter. The Hawthornes returned to America in June of 1860 and took up residence again at the Wayside, Sophia and Una were still not yet in good health.
