He graduated from University of VA with a BS in 1912 and an MA on 17 June 1914 in Mathematics and Chemistry. Was a Delta Tau Delta.

With the diploma in his pocket he joined the "Phillies" of Philadelphia in 1912 as a pitcher in the National League after pitching for 3 years on the Univ. of Virginia team. He remained with the Phillies for a number of years and later joined the Cincinatti Reds where he remained through the 1930 season. He pitched in the National League continuously for 18 years (only exception was 1918 when he served in the US Army). He was a First Lieutenant in the Chemical Warfare Branch. His debut was 21 June 1912. He batted right and threw left handed. His lifetime ERA was 3.15 and his best year was 1916 when he had 1.85 ERA. He had 37 shutouts in his career. He batted 0.191 He pitched one game in the 1915 World Series - He lost. Was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown in 1963.

He taught mathematics for several years at the Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Virginia.
