Notes for Louis C. Franklin Gremard

!US Census 1880 (8 June) Missouri, Pemiscot Co., Godain Township, Roll T9_707, SD 2 ED 93, Sheet 11, Page 611C, House No. 92, Lines 25-30: Louis F. Gremard (b. 1844 - 36 - in MO - Occ: Farmer - Fa: MO and Mo: MO) married to Martha A. (b. 1850 - 30 - in MO - Fa: MO and Mo: MO). Children listed (born in MO) are: Louis J. (son b. 1867 - 13); Wm. C. F. (son b. 1872 - 8); Ibanora C. (dau b. 1874 - 6); and Nevel (son b. 1878 - 2)

Louis was born in 1843 and appears in the 1850 US Census records. He 8 years old living with Elizabeth Williams (b. 1798 - 52) many other children are listed all with different last names. Nicholas Ona?, 15, Mary E. Kinlan, 7, Peter Dapron, 9. No record is found for Jean-Baptiste Gremard (assume he, his wife, and daughter died before the 1850 census or are living with another family and that Louis was in a foster home, orphanage, or the home of a relative.

He served in the Confederate Army as a Pvt in Company I of William L. Jeffers Regiment of Missouri Cavalry from August 14, 1862 until he was released as a prisoner of war in Whittsburg, Ark on May 25, 1865. He appears on a list of non-effective men, dismounted and unarmed, of Col Jeffers Regiment that were taken to Searcy, Ark, July 26, 1863. He is described as 5'11", blue eyes, light hair and fair complexion.

Cause of Death: Killed by a falling tree. Contusion of the left lung and concussion of the frontal portion of the brain. He was sick 10 days before he died. He is buried in Branhams Cemetery, Portageville, MO
